Groundwork Hudson Valley will host its 15th annual Great Saw Mill River Cleanup on Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event aims to revitalize cleanliness and conserve the free-flowing water quality of the Saw Mill River. As a result, significantly reducing pollution, debris, and contamination.

Dedicated to improving environmental and economic conditions throughout Yonkers, Groundwork Hudson Valley collaborates with community-based groups and locals in the surrounding areas. The coalition seeks to further spread the value of environmental awareness, and motivate others to work alongside them in enforcing healthier and more sustainable green spaces in the community.

    Valuing awareness, action, and community

Established in 2001, the Saw Mill River program has raised awareness about the river's poor water quality. Consequently, it has led to implementing more efficient and environmentally friendly practices that strengthen urban waterways and their ecosystem. The Daylighting of Saw Mill River was among the first initiatives to involve the community and advance habitat improvements across Yonkers.

The organization values awareness, action, and community in its efforts to create a better environment both presently and in the future. Each year, volunteers and contributors remove tons of waste, toxins, invasive vines, and debris from the river. Thus, enhancing the presence of native trees and supporting the livelihood of aquatic habitats such as turtles, ducks, blue crabs, and eels.

    Partnerships and progress

Throughout the years, Groundwork partnered with numerous public officials and organizations to revive aquatic habitat and wildlife. Projects include promoting recreational opportunities, encouraging sustainable land use, and raising awareness of the river's history and significance.

The Saw Mill River program has played a pivotal role in renewing the environment, fostering inclusivity, and building climate resilience. It fosters a sense of togetherness in the community, with residents becoming more mindful of ways they can empower, encourage, and learn from each other to continue making progress.
