MENOMINEE — A 22-year-old Daggett man was arrested on Tuesday after sending terrorist threats to the Menominee courthouse and other organizations, officials said.

Peter James Sand was charged with making a false report or threat of terrorism and two associated felonies. The offenses are each punishable by up to 20 years in prison, according to Menominee County prosecuting attorney Jeffrey Rogg.

Sand called Rogg’s office on Feb. 1 and Feb. 15 and left threatening voicemail messages, according to court documents.

The voicemails stated, “you’re going to pay the price. Just wait until I get my hands around your…throat,” and “I will hurt you bad… you’re dead meat, Rogg.”

“Acts intended to influence or affect the conduct of government through intimidation or coercion will not be tolerated and such persons will be held accountable,” Rogg said.

The Menominee County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant with telecommunications companies to find the perpetrator, who had tried to conceal his identity.

The sheriff’s office obtained a search warrant for his house after the first investigation determined that the threatening calls were from Sand.

“Terroristic threats in Menominee County will not be tolerated,” said Menominee County Sheriff Mike Holmes. “My office will continue to investigate and prosecute any such occurrences in our county.”

The search warrant at Sand’s Daggett Township residence revealed evidence that he allegedly also made terrorist threats against the Marquette city clerk’s office, the Delta County Board of Commissioners and Gold Resource Corporation (formerly Aquila Resources Inc.). Rogg said the sheriff’s office considers those cases solved based on their work.

“I plan to recuse myself (as the nominal victim in Menominee) and due to the multi-jurisdictional nature of the alleged conduct, and ask the Michigan attorney general to prosecute these matters,” Rogg said.

Sand was arraigned before Judge Robert Jamo in 95-A District Court on Wednesday. His bond was set at $250,000. He remained in custody on Thursday at the Menominee County Jail.

Jamo recused himself due to his professional relationship with Rogg. The Michigan state court administrator’s office will assign a new judge.

Holmes reminded community members that tips and information related to criminal activity or suspicious behavior may be reported anonymously via the Crime Stoppers of Marinette and Menominee County Facebook page or through the Crime Stoppers mobile tip app.
