Residents To Learn About Safe Disposal of Prescription Drugs

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) is working with Lowndes County residents to help safely discard prescription drugs. Regional Extension Agent, Roosevelt Robinson, Ed.D., is holding a free “Prescription Drug Take-Back” class in Whitehall, April 24, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the White Hall town hall building.

“When we think about water pollution, we usually think about contaminants such as trash, oil, bacteria, or fertilizers. However, prescription drugs are a part of that contaminants group, too,” Robinson said.

The “Prescription Drug Take-Back Program” is offered statewide in collaboration with law enforcement personnel. During the class, Robinson will share the latest research on the impact that prescription drugs and personal care products (PPCP) have on the environment.

“We are trying to help residents safely dispose of any of their unused prescription drugs and personal care products. Unfortunately, if not destroyed properly, some products make their way into the environment through sewer systems or landfills,” Robinson said.

U.S. Geological Survey testing first initiated in 2002 found PPCP contaminants present in many lakes, groundwaters, and waterways across the US. While these contaminants have been detected, their presence is at very low levels-found in parts per billion (ppb) or parts per trillion (ppt).

Anyone hoping to safely dispose of their expired or unused prescription drugs may attend this class and place their items in the prescription drug drop off box outside the Whitehall Town building.
