Baseball season arrived in full force this week with several teams playing their first games of the spring, including big wins for Park Center/Columbia Heights/Maranatha and Robbinsdale Cooper High School, while Champlin Park and Robbinsdale Armstrong high schools picked up wins in week two.

    Breck School

Breck boys baseball opened its season on a difficult note last week, falling 14-1 to Holy Family on April 12. Thomas Belman scored the Mustangs’ single run, which he also picked up an RBI for.

The Mustangs nearly found a perfect response on April 13, falling 12-11 to Holy Angels at home to conclude an action-packed week of non-conference games. Next was Breck’s game at home against Providence Academy on April 15, which occurred after this edition went to press.

    Brooklyn Center

The Brooklyn Center High School Centaurs opened the baseball season with a 1-0 loss to St. Croix Lutheran at home on April 9. Brooklyn Center had a stronger performance at bat on April 12, falling 12-6 to Como Park at home.

    Champlin Park

The Rebels faced their first loss of the season last week, falling 6-1 to Spring Lake Park at home on April 11. The result was by far the lowest-scoring game Champlin Park High School has faced so far after 12 combined runs against River Falls and Armstrong.

Champlin Park responded the next day with a 2-0 win against Blaine to improve its Northwest Suburban record to 2-1 with runs in the top of the third and sixth innings.

    PCM

The Park Center/Columbia Heights/Maranatha co-op baseball team opened last week with a resounding 15-2 win over Kennedy to pick up an early Tri-Metro Conference win on April 12. Adam Aasen picked four innings and completed eight kills, while Jose Garcia hit two RBI, one a double and one a single.

    Robbinsdale Armstrong

Armstrong baseball picked up its first win of the season on April 8, beating Hopkins 4-1.

Jack Schultz got his first varsity hit in the win, while Will Schultz completed a pinch hit triple to help reach victory. Pitcher Trey Dwyer also made his varsity debut on the mound.

Armstrong earned a second win of the season April 9, beating Totino-Grace 6-4 in part thanks to an eventful varsity debut for Gideon Breker. Breker had two hits, a single and a double, and also caught the final out at right field to ensure victory for the Falcons.

The win streak came to an end for Armstrong April 11 with a 6-3 loss at home to Anoka. Luke Weisjahn stood out for Armstrong with two runs scored.

Armstrong closed out the week with a 3-2 win on the road against Spring Lake Park, concluding a busy run of games with 2-2 Northwest Suburban Conference record, 3-2 overall.

    Robbinsdale Cooper

The Cooper High School Hawks opened the season last week on a perfect note, beating Como Park 7-1 at home on April 9. The team showed patience for its first win last season, so this start is a promising sign of progress with head coach Rob Eberle in his second year in charge.

Cooper did face a tough second game two days later, falling 21-0 to Edison in a second non-conference game of the opening week.

Cooper closed the week out with a more competitive 6-2 loss to St. Anthony to kick off Tri-Metro Conference play at home on April 12.
