Supervisor of Visual and Performing Arts for Queen Anne’s County Public Schools, Michael Bell has been honored with the 2024 National Supervision & Administration Art Educator of the Year Award by the National Art Education Association (NAEA). This prestigious accolade, bestowed upon Bell for his exceptional contributions to arts education leadership, was presented at the NAEA 2024 National Convention on April 4.

NAEA President Wanda B. Knight states, “This award is being given to recognize excellence in professional accomplishment and service. Michael Bell exemplifies the highly qualified art educators active in education today: leaders, teachers, students, scholars, and advocates who give their best to their students and the profession.”

In his role as supervisor, Bell oversees curriculum development, state and federal grants, and professional learning experiences for QACPS teachers. His influence extends beyond the local level, as he serves as a selected member of the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Superintendent’s Fine Arts Advisory Panel, contributing to the advancement of arts education across the state.

Under Bell’s leadership, Queen Anne’s County Public Schools has seen remarkable growth and innovation in arts education initiatives. From pioneering district-wide art exhibitions like ArtScene to introducing Advanced Placement courses and inspiring National Arts Honor Societies, Bell’s vision has transformed the landscape of arts education in the district.

Trinity Villanueva, NAEA division director, praised Bell’s leadership and dedication. Dr. Patricia Saelens, superintendent of QACPS, echoed this sentiment, highlighting Bell’s passion for arts education.

“Mr. Bell is a motivator. A champion of the arts and most importantly a fierce advocate for the students here in Queen Anne’s County. His passion for the arts and for helping our students and teachers succeed is inspirational to those around him,” said Saelens, who also recently presented Bell with the 2024 Outstanding Leadership Award for the district.

Bell also delivered multiple national workshops at the NAEA National Convention and served on an esteemed panel facilitated by Sarah Ackermann, executive director for Teaching Innovation at Ball State University on “Tough Problems in Supervision and Administration Require Tough Solutions”, further solidifying his reputation as a leader in arts education at the national level.

Queen Anne’s County Public Schools extends heartfelt congratulations to Bell on this well-deserved recognition. His tireless dedication to advancing arts education and his commitment to fostering creativity and innovation serve as an inspiration to educators and students alike.

The NAEA’s National Supervisor of the Year Award is the highest national honor for arts education leadership.
