Officials have identified the body discovered inside a trash can that mysteriously appeared in a California neighborhood last week. According to SFGate , the bin containing the human remains of 32-year-old Heather Haas was dumped near Wentworth Street and Sherman Grove Avenue in Sunland on April 16.

William Elliot told NBC 4 that someone left the trash can on his property, so he moved it to the street. He called the Los Angeles Police Department when he noticed something "not right" about the odor coming from the garbage container.

"It smells bad and it was zip tied and very suspicious that the serial number was scratched off of it," Elliot explained.

Los Angeles County detectives confirmed the body was found inside a snowboarding bag and suffered significant decomposition. It's unclear how long Haas was dead before she was placed in the trash can. Officials haven't released her cause of death, and the investigation is ongoing.

The shocking discovery has left neighbors stunned and wanting more answers.

“I am scared i just want to know what happened," Maria Markarian , a Sunland resident, told NBC 4 . "It is disturbing, I go back and forth here to know what happened because I want to protect my family and the neighborhood.”
