As of last Friday, the final details behind Spears ’ civil suits against her estranged father have been settled. Though the settlement remains sealed, it is clear that the pop icon will no longer be engaged in any matters with 71-year-old Jamie Spears following the end of her infamous 13-year conservatorship.

“Although the conservatorship was terminated in November 2021, her wish for freedom is now truly complete,” Spear’s lawyer Mathew Rosengart said in a statement . “As she desired, her freedom now includes that she will no longer need to attend or be involved with court or entangled with legal proceedings in this matter… Britney Spears won when the court suspended her father, and Britney Spears won when her fundamental rights and civil liberties were restored.”

But a settlement doesn’t always feel like a win, and Britney made her feelings known in a since-deleted Instagram post. Instead of praising that her legal matters are closed, Britney expressed fears that true justice will never be found. “My family hurt me!!” she wrote in the lengthy caption. “There has been no justice and probably never will be… The way I was brought up I was always taught the formative of right and wrong but the very two people who brought me up with that method hurt me !!!”

The conservatorship first began in 2008, where her father Jamie and other actors were placed in charge of the singer’s assets given her struggles with mental health. However, that conservatorship power extended to nearly every aspect of Spears’ life, leading to her inability to make personal, medical, career, and financial decisions on her own. With lawyers and the growing cry behind the #FreeBritney movement, Britney successfully sued to end the conservatorship back in 2021. Since then, the legal situation between her and her father was mostly about the final legal details, such as lawyers fees. It is estimated that she will be paying up to $2 million in fees.

The singer ultimately ended her insta caption by saying that, though she feels “lucky to be here,” she has no plans to speak to her family in person. “The child in me knows they would be destroyed and that’s basically it !!! I do miss my home in Louisiana and I wish I could visit but they took everything.”

After posting late Sunday night, Spears then deleted her entire account - though not before fans could screenshot and reshare her statement.
