(670 The Score) The Cubs are getting a big bat back in their lineup.

The team has activated center fielder Cody Bellinger from the injured list, manager Craig Counsell said on the Parkins & Spiegel Show on Tuesday afternoon. Bellinger had been out since suffering fractured ribs on April 23, when he collided with the wall.

Bellinger will serve as the designated hitter in the Cubs’ lineup Tuesday when Chicago hosts San Diego. He’ll remain the DH for a couple days after that as well, Counsell said, before the team puts him back in center field.

"We'll kind of go from there and see where we're at and see what's next," Counsell said.

Bellinger is hitting .226 with five homers, 17 RBIs and a .760 OPS in 22 games this season. He was the Cubs’ best hitter in 2023 and has been a driving force of their success.

"We're getting a good bat back into the lineup," Counsell said. "It's 13 days (since the injury), which I think we should feel pretty good about. He's not healed yet. We'll see how he feels. He's felt really good. He had a really good, productive day yesterday that kind of put us over the edge here in terms of activating him. And he's excited to get back."

In other roster moves Tuesday, outfielder Alexander Canario has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa, reliever Daniel Palencia has been placed on the 15-day injured list with shoulder stiffness and right-hander Keegan Thompson has been recalled from Triple-A, Counsell said.

Canario is hitting .273 with one homer and an .815 OPS in 13 games for the Cubs this season.

Palencia has a 6.55 ERA in seven appearances for the Cubs this season. Thompson has a 3.38 ERA in seven appearances.
