HAINES CITY, FL — According to the Haines City Fire Department, a serious incident disrupted the quiet of Haines City earlier today as a large dump truck collided with a power pole, leading to downed power lines and a brush fire at the busy intersection of Polk City Road and Wilbar Lane.
The accident occurred at approximately 12:00 PM, when the truck reportedly veered off the road and struck a power pole, causing it to crash and bring down two poles in total. The impact sparked a brush fire, spreading over an area of 200 by 100 feet, posing immediate danger to nearby areas.
Responding swiftly, the Haines City Fire Department deployed several units including engines HCEN-1 and HCEN-2, brush fire unit HCBR-1, and command unit HCBC-1 to tackle the emergency. Upon arrival, the first responders found the dump truck overturned but were able to quickly extinguish the brush fire, preventing it from causing more extensive damage.
The driver of the truck, who had managed to exit the vehicle by himself prior to the arrival of the emergency crews, suffered minor injuries and was transported to Heart of Florida Hospital by Polk County Fire Rescue.
Fire Chief Drew Neubrand lauded the prompt and effective action of his team. "Our team performed brilliantly under pressure,” said Chief Neubrand. "Their quick action and teamwork were crucial in containing the fire and handling the situation with utmost safety. It’s their dedication that keeps our community safe every day."
Duke Energy was on site promptly to address the power outage caused by the accident and begin repairs on the damaged power lines. The area suffered only minor property damage and, thankfully, no environmental hazards such as fuel leaks were reported.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation into the cause of the accident and has advised motorists and local residents to steer clear of the area during the ongoing cleanup and repair operations. Further updates will be provided as the investigation continues and more information becomes available.
