Correction officers recognized for their outstanding work

    2024-05-08

MARINETTE — Marinette County Sheriff Randy Miller reminds citizens that the first week of May (May 5-11) is National Correction Officers Week. This week is set aside to honor the work of correctional officers and correctional personnel nationwide and is an opportunity to thank those who serve and protect the public in this critically important profession. They often do not get the recognition they deserve, and our criminal justice system could not function without them.

Correctional officers have the difficult and frequently dangerous duty assignment of ensuring the custody, safety, and well-being of inmates, Miller stated. The duties of these officers has continued to be increasingly complex and demanding over the years. After completing weeks of training, correctional officers perform as counselors, communicators, record keepers, referees and negotiators, transportation to court hearings, food service workers, recreation specialists, property managers, and first responders. The danger they face on the job can never be understated, and adequate self-defense training is essential.

The continuous dedication, courage, and professionalism displayed daily by the men and women who serve our county deserve this well-earned recognition, Miller said. Here in Marinette County, our own jail often experiences very high population numbers. We recognize our correctional officers are placed in dangerous and unpredictable situations and face risks of bodily harm on each shift, Miller said. They are also charged with helping individuals effectively reenter society. The field of corrections is founded on the principle that people have the ability to change if given the opportunity.

The public looks to corrections officers for safety and protection. Our prisons and jails never close, and corrections staff learn to work around important moments with family due to their ongoing commitment, dedication, and loyalty to the agencies they serve. Correctional officers clearly deserve our recognition, respect, and appreciation for ensuring that our correctional facility and functions are operated safely and humanely, Miller said. It is appropriate that we honor the many contributions and accomplishments of these men and women who are a vital component of the field of corrections. These officers daily place their lives at risk to protect and serve the citizens of Marinette County. Weappreciate and thank each of them for the great work they do on a daily basis, the sheriff said.
