(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department announced the passing of retired CSPD K9 Belka, who served in the force for almost a decade.
Belka was the first dog assigned to the Regional Explosives Unit, starting the EOD K-9 program. During her time at CSPD, Belka found numerous explosive devices and did sweeps for community events and VIP guests.
CSPD described Belka as a sweet, feisty, spunky, and stubborn pup. Belka was always willing to do anything for a treat. The department recalled a time when she paused her search during one of her certifications to catch a bird. She continued after the brief delay and passed her certification.
Belka also performed a sweep for former President Trump and ate one of his hamburgers. CSPD said she “maintained” it was poison control and she was doing her job to protect the POTUS.
Belka’s handler was retired Sergeant Chris Arseneau, who passed away in an accident in Oct. 2022. After the accident, Belka was given to Arseneau’s daughter, Emily. Before his passing, the three were best friends, CSPD said they were a true pack. Belka was there for Emily’s graduation from middle school, high school, and college.
Both gals grew up together, CSPD described Belka as Emily’s most loyal companion. During her retirement, she enjoyed long walks and plenty of naps in the sun. She passed on Friday, May 17.
