    Local Alamogordo Officers Ferguson and Sides Honored in Santa Fe

    The New Mexico Department of Public Safety announced that it joined law enforcement officials, dignitaries and families to memorialize three officers who died in the line of duty at the New Mexico Law Enforcement Memorial Service on Wednesday 5-22-24. The memorial event was hosted live and was also streamed for those unable to attend.

    Law enforcement, family, and friends are all gathered at the New Mexico Department of Pubic Safety Academy to honor and memorialize three officers who died in the line of duty.

    Officer Anthony Ferguson from the Alamogordo Police Department, Officer James Sides of the Alamogordo Police Department and Sheriff Michael Reeves of the Curry County Sheriff's Office.

    Officer Anthony Ferguson was killed in the line of duty when he was shot and killed during a foot pursuit on July 15. Officer Ferguson died the next day.

    The suspect in the shooting, Dominic De La Owas arrested and charged with murder in the incident. His trial is schedule to begin in November.

    Officer James Sides was shot in the head on April 3, 1984, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

    Officer Sides responded to a trespassing call in Alamogordo. When he arrived, the subject left the home and fired at officers. Officer Sides was struck in the head and broke his leg when he fell.

    Officer Sides underwent a seven hour surgery to remove the bullet from his head.

    Officer Sides retired from the police department in October 1984. He died on August 14, 2023 from injuries sustained in the shooting in 1984.

    Curry County Sheriff Michael Reeves died in a hotel room while attending a training session at the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy in Santa Fe on December 4, 2023.

    Sheriff Reeves was elected to the position in 2022, and served as an law enforcement officer in Curry County for 16 years.
