Too Little Too Late as Cubs Fall 4-3 to Cardinals

With another loss on Sunday, the Chicago Cubs are now only one game above .500. Things need to change quickly if there are any hopes of a postseason run. It appears that the team continues to be fine with it's mediocrity by not making the changes needed.

Too many games have been lost for this Cubs' team already. It is infuriating that they continue to remain idle. It won't get any easier as their next test will be against the Brewers in Milwaukee.

For now, dissecting this game is the best course of action in determining what went wrong. The Cubs should be doing the same thing if they want to get better.

    Tale of the Tape

In what was a rain filled day in St. Louis, the skies gave in and baseball was a go. For the Cubs, they were looking to leave with at least one win in the short series. Javier Assad was a good starter to turn to for it.

Unfortunately, his night was not as solid as usual and the Cubs were playing catchup for most of the game. It was Paul Goldschmidt who gave the thunder for the Cardinals offense on Sunday. A two home run night gave the veteran positive momentum after some early season struggles.

Assad made it through 5 innings before turning the ball over to the bullpen. Drew Smyly and Porter Hodge came in for relief. They did their best by not allowing any earned runs the rest of the game.

The spotlight was now on the offense to wake up and do something for once. Sonny Gray gave the offense fits. It wasn't till his night was done that the Cubs began to provide life.

Ian Happ woke up in a big way as he gave a two home run night of his own for the Cubs. If there is one bright spot from this game, it is the hope that things are finally turning around for the switch hitter.

The Cubs were knocking on the door against Cardinals' closer Ryan Helsley. With Ian Happ's second home run, it was looking like the tide could be turning for once.

Down to their final out, the Cubs brought Nick Madrigal to the plate. A single to right field was encouraging. Another by Mike Tauchman next made things really interesting.

With runners at first and third, it was up to Seiya Suzuki to play hero on Sunday. But just like Ryan Reynold's Green Lantern , he was unsuccessful. A lineout to centerfielder Michael Siani seals an ugly weekend for the Cubs.

    Takeaways

Like a broken record, it is well past the time for the Cubs to wake up and make changes to a slumbering team. There seems to be no urgency in correcting any problems that cloud over them.

The catching position is a blackhole on offense and nobody outside of Ian Happ has been able to hit for any power. It's embarrassing how close the Cubs are to greatness but never can take it and run with it.

As it stands, the Brewers pose a big test to a Cubs' team that doesn't seem like they are ready to pass. If they continue down this path, they can certainly kiss their postseason hopes goodbye.
