Area firefighters spent approximately more than five hours Sunday evening battling a structure fire on County Road 3534, on property near Saltillo ISD gymnasium. The residents were reported to have escaped the home without injury, but the structure was destroyed.

The blaze was dispatched at 12:55 p.m. May 26 and crews on scene reported the blaze was out at 7:11 p.m. Hopkins County EMS responded not only with an ambulance to standby as a precaution and to help keep firefighters hydrated, but also brought the Ambus to the location to assist in helping to hydrate multiple firefighters if needed in the extreme heat. In addition to firefighters from multiple area departments, Precinct 3 crews brought equipment to assist at the scene as well. With temperatures in the 90s, the heat in the multilevel structure, a house that'd been added to more than once over the years, was easily in the triple digits. Firefighters were able to salvage a few personal items for the family, but most of the structure and contents were damaged by the extreme heat as well as smoke and water from the firefight.

Saltillo Volunteer firefighter monitored the site and returned with firefighting equipment multiple times over the 24-hours following the iniital knockdown when embers inside the structure rekindled.
