When I was growing up, women seldom talked about what it was like to experience the midlife change. Except for the more apparent symptoms, such as hot flashes and mood swings, the lesser-known signs of this life stage went unspoken.
This code of silence must have left many women feeling like they were losing their minds when they experienced these unusual occurrences. At least, that’s how I initially felt. But remember, you’re not alone in this. While some symptoms may not occur in everyone, they could happen to you.
Hear what they are in this video shared on May 2:
As if night sweats weren’t enough, Staci (@ stacidhall ) tells us there are even more odd symptoms we may have to look forward to. And the ones she’s talking about today differ from the common ones we often associate with this midlife change. So, if you have experienced them or do them in the future, you’ll know you’re in good company.

Seven Unusual Menopause Symptoms
- Vertigo and dizziness . This symptom she describes is not uncommon, yet it can make us feel something is very wrong.
- Irregular heartbeat or heart palpitations. She describes this feeling as either racing or pounding. It may also feel like the heart is skipping a beat or fluttering. This can lead many to believe they're having cardiovascular problems. This is something that began happening to me a few years back, and thankfully, after receiving a full cardiac workup, I learned my heart was doing just fine. But it was a terrifying experience.
- Electric shock sensations. She reveals that it’s uncertain whether hormone imbalance in the hypothalamus or missed firing of neurons in the nervous system causes these sensations of electric shock throughout the body. Either way, she tells us they commonly precede hot flashes, and experts believe that lessening alcohol intake can sometimes help.
- Paresthesia . This can be a numbness or tingling sensation in our extremities, which can feel scary.
- Formication . This terrifying sensation could make it feel like bugs are crawling on or under your skin. Oh no! That would be terrifying indeed!
- Burning mouth syndrome . This symptom can make it feel like you have just burned your mouth on something like hot coffee. While it can be pretty alarming, she reports many women experience it.
- Incontinence . She reveals that 50% of postmenopausal women will experience some loss of bladder control. Fortunately, this condition can often receive some level of help from new pelvic floor therapies.
While no one ever wants to experience these unusual symptoms, at least you’ll know you’re not losing your mind if you do. Despite being little consolation, this period of life, like all others, shall pass, too.
