Two die in two-vehicle crash in Town of Grover

    2024-06-03

MARINETTE — Two women died in a two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon in the Town of Grover.

A vehicle driven by Scott Mathis, 46, Pembine, was traveling south on County Trunk W and failed to stop for the stop sign at County Trunk B at 1:06 p.m. Sunday, according to a press release from Marinette County Sheriff Randy Miller. The Mathis vehicle collided with a vehicle traveling east driven by Elysia Kust, 44, Coleman. Elysia Kust and a passenger, Mary Kust, 73, Coleman, sustained fatal injuries in the crash.

Miller said, inattentive driving and failure to stop at a stop sign appear to have been factors in the crash that remains under investigation by the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, Marinette County District Attorney’s Office, and the Marinette County Medical Examiner’s Office. Also assisting Marinette County deputies at the scene were members of the Wisconsin State Patrol, Grover Porterfield Fire Department, Peshtigo Police Department, Bay Area Rescue and the Marinette County Highway Department.

This is the first fatal crash, and first and second fatalities related to a motor vehicle crash in Marinette County in 2024.
