After first teasing the latest project with cryptic letter to fans noting that she will be dropping her follow-up to 2021’s Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross ( Nine Inch Nails )-produced If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power soon. Halsey has now released its first song — not first single — "The End."
As she noted in a post announcing “the first song off my 5th album,” one day before dropping he track. “Before the first single comes, I wanted to share this. It means a lot to me and I love it," the caption read. "Let’s try something different this time and start at ‘The End’.”
On the day of it’s release, Halsey shared another post featuring a series of photos and videos showing the artist dealing with the struggles that come with Lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect many parts of the body.
“long story short, i’m Lucky to be alive. short story long, i wrote an album. it begins with The End. out now.” The post also included tags for the Lupus Research Alliance and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, both of which Halsey is making a donation to in conjunction with today’s new song release.
As for what else Halsey had to say about the project, you can see for yourself via a new website that features stickers and other clickable items that will keep fans guessing until more concrete details arrive.
Flipping through formylasttrick.com you can read Halsey’s letter -- a typewritten note from Ashley Frangipane (her real name) to a faux radio station program director -- which states, “As you may have guessed, I have written a new album. But I needed some time to figure out how to say what I needed to say. You see, I’ve been holding [REDACTED] and I need to let it out.”
Halsey continues, “There’s so much I am going to reveal on this record, but you need to know some of the story first. So before the chaos and confetti of big singles and album releases I just needed to tell you, my friend, why it all matters this time. I’m releasing a new song on June 4. It’s just for us. Let’s start at THE END.”
Another interesting item on the For My Last Trick website is a sticker saying, “I Have Something to Tell You,” which upon clicking invites fans to sign up for a mailing list. Lastly, clicking on the label “Lesstime Hits and Grooves” opens up a playlist showing perhaps the more lo-fi direction of her new sound, featuring 29 songs from mainly the '70s , including tracks by Joni Mitchell , Gordon Lightfoot , and Fleetwood Mac , as well as Tracy Chapman , Elliott Smith , and more.
