The driver whose vehicle crashed into another vehicle after fleeing pursuit by the Wake County Sheriff’s Office Sunday night has died, the sheriff’s office reported.

Deputies attempted life saving measures on Aidan Joseph Gambone, 18, until EMS arrived, according to WCSO. He was pronounced deceased on scene by EMS.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol determined that the Nissan Gambone was driving traveled through the stop light at US 401 North and NC 96, striking a Toyota Camry passenger car, according to WCSO. The driver of the Toyota Camry was transported to the hospital.

“The decision to pursue is evaluated with the responsibility to stop dangerous drivers and the safety of the community,” said Wake County Sheriff Willie Rowe. “Our thoughts and condolences are with Aidan Gambone’s family and all those affected by this incident. Deputies are trained to handle these situations with the utmost care and in accordance with our pursuit policies and prioritizing public safety. We are cooperating fully with SHP to ensure a transparent and thorough review. Our office remains committed to ensuring the safety of our roads for all and to continually improving and reviewing our practices.”

The incident began June 2 around 9:45 p.m., when a deputy observed a Nissan 370 traveling nearly 115 mph in a 70 mph zone on I-540. The deputy attempted to conduct a vehicle stop on Louisburg Road off I-540, according to WCSO.

The driver drove through the red light and did not stop, the sheriff’s office reported.

The driver continued down Louisburg Road in an unsafe manner, using the oncoming lane of travel to pass other vehicles, and failing to stop at multiple stop lights, according to WCSO.

While approaching US 401 North and NC-96, deputies observed a crash that had already occurred and determined the Nissan Gambone was driving and a Toyota Camry were involved.

At the time of the crash, deputies had lost sight of the driver, WCSO reported.
