The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Northfield area. City staff has been working with the NWS to evaluate the rainfall amounts and corresponding effect on river levels in the area. Over 2 inches of rain fell across portions of Rice County over 24 hours Sunday and Monday. As a result, the Cannon River level incurred a sharp rise at Northfield.

The Cannon River in Northfield was at 897.42’ as of 10:30 a.m. June 3. NWS professionals have created a graph depicting potential rainfall and resulting possible Cannon River levels in Northfield: water.noaa.gov/gauges/nrfm5 .

In Northfield, 897’ is considered flood stage. When the river reaches that level, some Northfield properties and park areas along the river are directly affected. If an area in barricaded, do not drive or walk through area for safety reasons.

The NWS predicted the Cannon River to peak at approximately 898’ during the evening of June 3, and the river level was expected to slowly fall after that time.

The forecast for Tuesday night, though, indicated likely rainfall in the Cannon River Watershed area, meaning the level could rise quickly again.

Property owners in flood prone areas are urged to evaluate their flood preparedness and monitor weather information and river levels.

Check personal devices and subscriptions used to receive weather alerts to ensure you have the ability to monitor such alerts.

If your home or business is in the river/flood zone, make sure you have the materials, resources, and/or contacts necessary to enact protective measures if needed.

City staff has posted resources, guidelines, and contact information on the city of Northfield website under “Emergency Preparedness Resources” at northfieldmn.gov/615/Emergency-Preparedness .

City staff will continue to monitor weather and river levels and will disseminate more information as it becomes necessary.
