There is No Women's Basketball Craze, There is Only Caitlin Clark

Listen to Ben Maller of Fox Sports Radio’s The Ben Maller Show discuss the ongoing Caitlin Clark drama that has made her look like public enemy no. 1 to the rest of the players in the WNBA despite Clark’s colossal appeal to the general public, with Maller mocking the WNBA players for effectively trying to bite from the hand that feeds them.

Check out the segment above as Maller says the 2024 craze for women’s basketball is simply all Caitlin Clark and has little to do with Angel Reese , or the rest of Clark’s biggest critics who think she’s taken too much of the spotlight.

Angel Reese: "I'll take the bad guy role and continue to take that on and be that for my teammates. I know I'll go down in history, and I'll look back in 20 years and be like, 'Yeah, the reason why we're watching women's basketball is not just because of one person, it's because of me, too. I want y'all to realize that.. A lot of us have done so much for this game. There are so many great players in this league that have deserved this for a really, really long time, and luckily, it's coming now. Negative things have probably been said about me, but honestly, I'll take that because look where women's basketball is. People are talking about women's basketball like you never thought we would be talking about women's basketball. People are pulling up to games, we've got celebrities at the games, sold out arenas — just because of one single game [Iowa vs. LSU, 2023 National Championship].

Ben Maller: “It appears there’s a person named Angel Reese. I’m told she’s a basketball player who plays for the Chicago Sky, and she’s annoyed with all the praise Caitlin Clark gets and that it’s all about Caitlin Clark. Angel Reese recently went on a rant and says that SHE should be getting credit, and should be getting some of the love that has been going to Caitlin Clark. ‘The reason why we’re watching women’s basketball is not just because of one person!!’ She didn’t same her name but she meant Caitlin. She said it’s because of ‘ME TOO! I WANT ALL OF YOU TO REALIZE THAT!’... She also talked about being the ‘bad guy’ in this. Angel Reese believes she is also responsible for people watching women’s basketball and it’s not just Caitlin Clark.
So, how many flowers does Angel Reese deserve? First of all, this entire story is saucy. I’m not a customer of the WNBA but I have enjoyed when listeners have sent me stories about the bickering that is going on. I do recall years ago in the early days of the WNBA when advocates would complain ‘WE JUST WANNA BE TREATED LIKE THE MEN! JUST COVER US LIKE THE MEN!’... And that has happened now. A large percentage of the WNBA are just besides themselves. They need medication to calm themselves down because of the coverage, it’s hilarious.
But as far as this particular story with Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark, there is no BOOM – unpopular opinion – to women’s basketball. It is the Caitlin Clark BOOM, period, stop. In this story, the book has been written and Caitlin Clark is the Taylor Swift in this story. It’s been like a religious revival and people are going out to see her play.
SPOILER ALERT – they're not exactly going out in large numbers to see anyone else in that sport. The attendance and the TV ratings of games Caitlin Clark plays in versus everyone else, including Angel Reese -- If you get that line chart out and look at the one line with Caitlin Clark and it’s skyrocketing, and then you’ve got mostly a flat line in comparison to everyone else.”
