My friend chose a name for her daughter that’s so bad, it should be illegal

Every parent wants the world to know how precious and unique their child is, and some of them turn to names to help.

However, not all names are born equal, with some inadvertently backfiring as the child grows up.

The same could be said for *Casey’s family friends, who decided to take an unusual (yet surprisingly popular) name for their child and people certainly have … thoughts.

Casey was recently spending time with her family friends, who had been close to her parents for decades.

The couple adopted a daughter when she was six months old, and has always been a spark of joy for the family.

No matter how much Casey loves the little girl, who is now four or five years old, she just can’t warm up to her new name.

Shortly after being adopted, Casey’s family friends changed their daughter’s name and opted to go for something one-of-a-kind.

Before I reveal the kid’s name, it’s important to note the family’s last name starts with an “F”, which was a source of inspiration for them.

“They named their adopted daughter ‘ABCDE,’” Casey wrote on Reddit.

And because the family’s last name starts with an F, everything “conveniently” resembles the first six letters of the alphabet.

And how do you pronounce a name such as ABCDE?

“The little girl’s name is supposed to sound like ‘Absidy,’” Casey explained.

Casey was stupefied by this name, instantly feeling “bad for the poor baby”, who isn’t “much older than four or five.”

Unbelievably, this isn’t the only person in the world to have a name inspired by the alphabet.

In 2018, an American mother called out an airline for making fun of her daughter’s name (which happened to Abcde).

“The gate agent started laughing, pointing at me and my daughter, talking to other employees. So I turned around and said, ‘Hey, if I can hear you, my daughter can hear you, so I’d appreciate [it] if you’d just stop,’” the woman said, per CNN.

Others on the Reddit thread shared their own experiences with children named after the alphabet.

And if you weren’t sure about the legitimacy of the name, someone cleared it up.

“There [are] about 400 Abcdes born in the US since 1990, according to the Social Security Administration’s data,” they said. “I’m sure quite a few people have encountered them.”

And it’s true: as of 2018, roughly 370 women in the US are named Abcde, with the name increasing in popularity in the early ‘00s.

Despite its popularity, people on Reddit couldn’t shake the idea of naming your child after the alphabet.

“I bet that kid will be confused,” someone said. “Your kid’s name shouldn’t be an outlet for you to show how ‘quirky’ you are,” another chimed in.

“Meet my daughter, Abcde, and my son, Qwerty,” said another.

“The first time I heard of this as a name I was in high school and thought it was neat,” a woman admitted. “A friend said she wanted to name a future daughter that. Thank goodness we grew up and realised the mistake it would be!”

Others argued the name should be banned altogether.

“Makes me sooooo happy I was born and raised in Germany where dumbf**kery like this is actually illegal,” read a comment.

“Is it pronounced Absurdity?” another agreed. “Seriously, [we need] a law to protect children from this!”

“I’ve seen this name a couple of times, and it INFURIATES me,” a third wrote. “Don’t use your kid’s name to spell out the alphabet,” Casey agreed.

But some saw the lighter side. “She’s going to have a slightly easier time learning to spell her name,” a person said.
