WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (WVNS) – Natural disasters can destroy homes and leave people in need. A special event took place in the Mountain State to try to help those who are disaster victims.

The Home Depot Foundation partnered with the Appalachia Service Project to provide homes for those affected by natural disasters.

16 different frames were built and were shipped off to Tennessee and Kentucky for completion.

Half of the homes built were shipped to Northern Tennessee and the other half were shipped to those affected by the floods in Eastern Kentucky.

Erin Izen, Executive Director of The Home Depot Foundation, said the work they do is not just in one location.

“We would like people to know that the Home Depot foundation and Home Depot is here to help them all the time. So, it’s not just in the big cities. It’s not just where we are located in Atlanta. We are in the backyards of our stores and are committed to give back to our communities,” said Izen.

With both areas afflicted in the Appalachian region, Appalachia Service Project’s involvement gave both rural areas the help they needed.

Melisa Winburn, President and CEO of Appalachian Service Project, said this project is a gamechanger for housing and community service.

“This is huge. Volunteerism is a big thing to show that volunteers can actually make a big difference in the community. Especially with housing, it’s great. I think a lot of people think that they can’t swing a hammer and you really can,” said Winburn.
