Brewer, Maine, police said that on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, around 11:00 p.m., they responded to a call for an assault that had just taken place on South Main Street in Brewer.

When the officers arrived at the scene, they found a victim suffering from serious injuries to his head. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Information obtained during the investigation determined that Nicholas Ireland, 29, of Orrington, blocked South Main Street with his vehicle and then went up to the victim with a hammer and a firearm. An altercation then took place and the victim was hit with the hammer multiple times. Ireland left the scene with property that belonged to the victim.

Brewer Police were able to determine that Ireland was in Bangor, and they requested assistance from the Bangor Police Department in locating Ireland. The Bangor Police Department located Ireland and detained him. Ireland was then arrested and charged with elevated aggravated assault, criminal threatening, and robbery.

Brewer Police said, upon their investigation, Ireland knew the victim and that the attack was not random. Further information will be released when appropriate.
