BREWTON, Ala. ( WKRG ) — A Saturday night in May, just after midnight.
A large crowd had gathered at Four Sons in Freemanville in Escambia County, Alabama. A rap battle was taking place between a group from Atmore and another from Evergreen when the guns came out.
“One person was shot four times,” Escambia County Alabama Sheriff Heath Jackson said. “We recovered over 85 shell casings on the scene where people pulled their guns out and started shooting at the cars leaving.”
Gunfire also hit several nearby houses in what is described as a normally quiet and peaceful neighborhood.
Security cameras captured the gun battle. Jackson says the man seen pulling out an AR-15-style pistol is 29-year-old Yeldon Rostchild. He is no stranger to law enforcement and was released earlier this year from the county jail after spending six years waiting to go to trial on a capital murder charge. That charge was ultimately dropped and he was released as part of a plea deal with prosecutors in January.
“Then here we are in May,” Jackson said. “Another firearm, another shooting.”
Rostchild is now back in the Escambia County Jail on 300 thousand dollars bond for Reckless endangerment, possession of a firearm and shooting into an occupied dwelling. Jackson says he is not responsible for shooting the person who was critically injured. He calls it “a turf war over something that should have never happened.”
The video also shows two other people with weapons. One of them also fired several rounds.
Investigators would like to identify them before the next shooting happens and because witnesses and even the victim are not cooperating with law enforcement, Jackson believes it will happen again.
“These large gatherings are powder kegs, and you never know when it is going to boil over, and we are very fortunate that it wasn’t worse than what it was,” Jackson said.
