County commission approves speed limit changes in 4 areas of county

Escambia County Commissioners responded to several requests for reducing speed limits in four areas of the county.
County Engineer Parker Ross told commissioners Monday that several speed limit changes were recommended.
The speed limit along Grissett Bridge Road will be changed to 35 miles per hour from the Barnett Highway intersection west for 4 miles then reduced to 25 miles per hour west to the end of the asphalt pavement.
Commissioner Larry White said a petition from the residents in the area had requested the change.
Ross agreed to the requested changes.
“Those changes are warranted,” Ross said. “The road is in bad shape structurally and there are lots of hills and curves in that area. The residents at the end of that curve wanted to have the speed reduced. Some residents had requested speed humps in addition to the reduced speeds, but that’s just not something that we do.”
A speed limit reduction was also approved for the county’s portion of Old Fishpond Road from Damascus Road. The change to a 25 miles per hour limit will span just over a quarter mile along the route. An area on Sardine Road will also see a reduction in speed limit to 40 miles per hour from the Foshee Road intersection to Stanley Crossroads.
Ross said the reduction is reasonable since there has been a plan in place for those changes.
“Brad (Solomon, assistant engineer) and I looked at the FAS plans that covered Sardine Road and Robinsonville Road to north Canoe Road,” Ross said. “The designed speed is 40 miles per hour and we are asking permission to post that there.”
White asked if the speed limit would remain at 45 miles per hour on Foshee Road south with Ross affirming that it would.
Following the FAS plan, the commission also approved reducing the speed limit on Robinsonville Road to 40 miles per hour from Stanley Crossroads to the 35 miles per hour speed zone near the Sardis Church Road intersection. No opposition was shown in the changes and was agreed to by commissioners.
In other business Monday, the commission:
• approved a USDA Lease renewal with amended charges from $11.66  to $12.50 per square foot;
• approved the rejection of all bids for FY24 Bid #10 Bituminous Surface Treatments;
• approved all insolvents, errors and litigation report as submitted by the Honorable Tim Pettis, tax collector;
• authorized White as the voting member to represent Escambia County at the NACO Legislative Conference set for July 12-15 in Tampa, Fla.;
• adopted a resolution approving participation in the Back-to-School sales tax holiday July 19-21.
