Rory McIlroy and his partner Erica Stoll have decided against their divorce plans in a stunning reversal, with the golfer releasing an explanation .

Despite news emerging of a surprise split last month just before the PGA Championship kicked off, McIlroy and Stoll have had a rethink. McIlroy has confirmed that the pair are giving their marriage another shot .

This turnaround comes after they've been hitched for seven years, having first crossed paths back in 2012.

After the dramatic change, McIlroy shared: "There have been rumours about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumour is a fool's game. Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realised that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning."

The couple got hitched in 2017 and have a three year old daughter named Poppy. Following Rory's move to start legal proceedings, Stoll, who's 36, had the usual 20 days under Florida law to answer back.

This latest patch-up is a massive twist in the tale for McIlroy and Stoll. Word was that Stoll was feeling isolated in their partnership, echoing the vibes from when McIlroy called it quits with tennis ace Caroline Wozniacki .

Rumors have been swirling about Rory McIlroy's love life, especially with CBS Sports golf reporter Amanda Balionis in the frame. The buzz grew when Balionis was spotted without her wedding ring around the same time as McIlroy's divorce news broke, and their cosy interviews didn't quell the whispers.

The internet went into a frenzy after they shared a hug off-camera following a particularly warm post-round interview. However, all the gossip amounted to naught.

When McIlroy's split hit the headlines, his representatives released a statement: "Rory's desire is to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He won't be making any further comment."

Now, as another major tournament looms, McIlroy finds himself fielding personal questions alongside his pursuit of a fifth major title.

Despite the off-course distractions, McIlroy managed a respectable tied-15th finish at the Memorial Tournament from June 6-9. He's set to tee off at 114pm on June 13 in the opening round of the US Open at Pinehurst No. 2. North Carolina.
