The Boys made The Deep and Homelander household names. The two characters embody everything that can go wrong in a world where superheroes are the norm. But as hatable as the characters are, they bring a lot to the show and make it what it is today. The performances bring these larger-than-life sociopaths to life and make them so terrifying and compelling.

In the lead-up to the release of The Boys Season 4 , I was lucky enough to get some time with both Chace Crawford and Antony Starr. We were able to delve into their work on the show and what fans can expect from the latest season. In a spoiler-free conversation, the actors delved into their love for the roles, the excitement for fans to see the latest entry, and their love for being a part of the project.

How does it feel for all of you to be part of The Boys , a series that has become so beloved?

Chace Crawford: I mean, listen, I think it’s one in a million, really,  because there’s an ocean of content out there these days, you know? I mean, the dream is to be able to work on something that you like the material, right? And then you love the people you work for, and then for it to even reach an audience in general, much less like a global breakthrough of the culture and consciousness is, it’s a home run on all accounts. So yeah, think it’s rarefied air that we appreciate and sort of savour as it’s going.

Antony Starr: Yeah, I would argue also that it’s difficult to really get any sort of comprehension of that from within. It’s very easy, maybe, to see things objectively from outside, but from within, All I really care about is that I get to work with good people on a good project. And right, somehow we get memed all the time. And it seems to be in pop culture.

Homelander, specifically, has become very diverse among fans. How does it feel to bring that level of reaction from The Boys’ viewers?

Antony Starr: Look, as I said, for me, it’s reflective of what the show is doing and how the show is reaching pop culture, which, you know, is where things kind of sink or swim these days. I’m happy to be a meme. I’m really happy to be a meme. But also, I think the broader picture is that the show is doing well, and we’re all part of it. It takes a massive team to pull it all together, and I’m really proud of everyone that’s a part of it.

What do you think fan’s reactions will be to both of your characters in The Boys Season 4?

Chace Crawford: Even from the trailer, I’ve gotten a few friends, and I’ve seen a few fan comments saying, “Oh, The Deep is going a little bit violent this year,” which is good. For me, it was just fun to play. Not everything was like that, but to lean into some of the anger and some of that power and assertiveness was fun. And we did a stunt sequence at the end of the season…it’s great. So maybe they’re excited to see a little bit different dimension of The Deep.

Antony Starr: There’s a lot more shades. Yeah, there’s a lot more light, dark and grey matter in what happened in season four for you. Right.

Chace Crawford: Thank you. I haven’t seen the full thing, so thank you. Yeah.

    Antony Starr: (Whispers) I have.

Chace Crawford: I guess I should have!

Antony Starr: For me, more of the same, but worse in a nutshell. Without dissecting it. I wouldn’t even I wouldn’t know where to start because there’s so much that happens from the beginning of season four to the end of season four. It’s a freaking roller coaster, man. I really don’t want to spoil anything.

My favorite movies are the ones that I go in not knowing anything about. And then I’m pleasantly surprised or whatever. That’s how found Blair Witch Project, and, uh, I want people to have the same thing. I want people to experience me like the Blair Witch .

You might not be able to tell me then, but do you have a favourite scene you filmed up to this point?

Antony Starr: I have a scene I’m semi-excited and semi-nervous for people to see. And it’s in episode four when Homelander goes home. There’s one scene in there which was very interesting to shoot and very much a leap of faith on my part and Eric’s part . He took the reins off and let me go. I’m very I’m excited to see, tentatively excited, to see what people think.

Thank you so much, both for your time.

    Chace Crawford: Absolutely. Thank you!

    Antony Starr: Thank you.

The Boys Season 4 premieres on Prime Video on June 13, 2024.
