The Northern Irish golf sensation announced on Tuesday that he had "voluntarily dismissed" his petition for separation from Stoll. McIlroy divulged his reasoning and the considerations behind his choice to stay with his wife, despite recent appearances suggesting their relationship was on the rocks.
"There have been rumours about my personal life recently , which is unfortunate," McIlroy remarked, as reported by The Guardian. "Responding to each rumour is a fool's game. Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realised that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning."
Speculation that McIlroy was referring to included whispers that the 35-year-old had begun a romance with CBS Sports presenter Amanda Balionis following his split from Stoll. Social media buzz suggested a budding relationship between the two, especially as McIlroy had just ended things with Stoll and Balionis had reverted to using her maiden name, reports the Irish Mirror .
Balionis is hitched to ex-NFL quarterback Bryn Renner and had been using his surname on her social media. But, she's recently scrubbed all mentions of Renner from her profiles and was seen sans wedding ring, sparking rumours that she and McIlroy could be an item.
Body language guru Judi James reckoned Balionis had McIlroy "purring" during their on-screen encounters, leading to "great interview" moments with "lots of chemistry every time."
"Many women presenters working in male-dominated sports use this technique. Non-sexual flirt rituals don't only get some of the guys paying them full attention and even eating out of their hands but it can also put the presenter in a position of control in the interview," explained James. "Getting thoughts and snippets that the interviewee might have been more guarded about revealing."
Meanwhile, the news that McIlroy and Stoll's split is off comes just after the extent of their rocky patch was laid bare. Stoll apparently missed the 20-day window to reply to McIlroy's court filing, as reported by the Daily Mail.
"A phone call will not protect you. Your written response including the case number given above and the names of the parties, must be filed if you want the Court to hear your side of the case," the officer who served Stoll with the divorce papers remarked. "If you do not file your response on time, you may lose the case, and your wages, money and property may thereafter be taken without further warning from the court."
Despite appearances suggesting their marriage was irretrievably broken, it seems Rory McIlroy and Erica Stoll have managed to resolve their issues. Notably, the couple has a three year old daughter, Poppy Kennedy McIlroy.
Should the divorce have proceeded, the documents indicate that McIlroy and Stoll had plans for joint parenting of their daughter Poppy, asserting both parents are financially capable of supporting her.
