JCPenney continues to shutter stores across the nation, including a handful in Texas, following a decision to declare bankruptcy in 2020. According to a list displayed on the company's website , a large number of locations scattered across the U.S. are slated to shut down this Fall, with many closing their doors by July 31st.

Stores closing across Texas include locations in Athens, Borger, Early, El Paso, Marshall, McAllen, Nacogdoches, Sequin, and Stephenville. The last day of operation for all aforementioned locations will be July 31st.

In 2012, there were a total of 1,104 JCPenney locations open across the country. That number has since decreased to just over 600 as of June 10th, 2024. A company spokesperson attributed many of the closures to the chain's inability to "continue our current lease terms" at affected locations (per a statement obtained by AL.com ).

"Regretfully, we are unable to continue our current lease terms for this store location and have been unable to find another suitable location in the market. We are grateful to our dedicated associates and the loyal customers who have shopped at our Mobile location throughout the year."
