    Grant County person dies of hantavirus, typically carried by rodents

    GRANT COUNTY, Wash. -- The Grant County Health District says a person in their 20s died of hantavirus which marks the first reported case since 2019.

    According to GCHD, hantavirus is a rare illness caused by a virus found in urine, droppings, and saliva of infected rodents. Deer mice are carriers locally.

    GCHD says this is the sixth case in the last 20 years and the first in Washington in 2024. The Washington State Public Health Laboratory determined the positive result June 10.

    The district says symptoms include fever, fatigue, and abdominal problems.
