Fans Are Calling for Costco to Carry This Odd Hot Dog Condiment

Hot dog aficionados have long-since debated whether ketchup or mustard are the superior topping , with even the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council weighing in that you shouldn't put ketchup on your hot dog after the age of 18. However, another surprisingly worthy frontrunner is emerging with a pretty vocal online campaign, as many people say mayonnaise is a game-changer, and are even calling for Costco to provide it as the chain's food courts.

It may sound unconventional, but mayo is quietly becoming a contender in the hot dog topping game. And it makes sense, as the condiment provides a richness and creaminess, not to mention a complex umami flavor, elevating the summer cookout staple. In Japan, it's perfectly normal to add a squirt of Kewpie mayo to your dog.

So maybe it is about time for Costco to provide mayo for its massively popular $1.50 hot dog and soda combo.

In fact, one shopper even revealed in a TikTok video last month that she BYOM, or, brings her own mayo to Costco since it "still hasn't put mayo in the condiments section." In the video, user Anabel Madrigal can be seen squirting it over an already healthy slathering of ketchup and mustard for the holy trifecta of condiments.

"Like not even the little pack of mayo, WHAT IS THE REASON ?!" she captioned the post. "I also don't like mayo THAT much but it hits."

Over on Reddit, another user sparked conversation with a post asking why the chain doesn't carry mayo. "I don't understand why my Costco doesn't have mayonnaise for the hotdogs," the person posted to the Costco subreddit . "They're my favorite condiment for them and no matter how many requests I do they don't even respond."

The demand for mayo at Costco rumbled into such a fever pitch that earlier this week, Hellmann’s even weighed in.

"It’s come to our attention that some of you are bringing your own mayo to hot dog spots where mayo isn’t offered," the brand posted on Instagram. "So today, we’re announcing the development of the Mini Mayo Dispenser: an innovative, miniaturized mayo delivery device designed to support mayo-on-dog lovers everywhere—especially consumers of our friends’ iconic, delicious, and beloved $1.50 hot dogs.

However given that Costco recently announced that it was finding ways to keep the $1.50 combo at the same price it has remained for nearly four decades, it's unclear if the chain is willing to take an added hit to its bottom line by giving away free mayo to customers. In the meantime, bringing your own packets or a squeeze bottle of Kewpie seems like the way to go.
