BLUEFIELD, WV (WVNS) – Kids from Mercer County are enjoying their summer vacation at a free summer camp.

On Thursday, June 13th, 2024, kids gathered at the Mount Zion Pentecostal Church to make crafts, color, and spend time with friends.

Kids were having a great time, but they were also learning important lessons about prevention education.

These camps are sponsored by Community Connections.

Eden Scruggs, who organized these camps and is the Director of Camp Mariposa, said this camp is a great deal for all parents.

“I would’ve been a Camp Mariposa camper. I would’ve loved to have activities like this to do when I was a kid. It’s completely free of charge and they have no cost to the parents whereas a lot of programs you have to pay. That is a big barrier for some and we also provide transportation,” said Scruggs to 59News.

These camps are for kids ages 6 to 14 and they stress the importance of drug prevention to young children.

Camps in July will be held at Matoaka Volunteer Fire Department.
