Joe Alwyn has finally spoken out for the first time since his break up with Taylor Swift . After decidedly keeping a low profile after the split, just as he did during the relationship, Joe is now doing press for his role in the Yorgos Lanthimos film Kinds of Kindness , and thus is speaking out about what the people want to know.

Alwyn and Swift dated for six years before breaking up in April 2023, at the start of the singer’s Eras Tour . The pair kept much of their relationship out of the spotlight, however many of Swift's songs reference dating as far back as 2017’s Reputation .

During a chat with the Sunday Times , the original Tortured Man Club member managed to dodge answering whether he has listened to his ex's latest album The Tortured Poets Department. The name of the album many assume is a supposed reference to the currently inactive group chat Alwyn shares with Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal , but he did however impart on what it’s like having his six-and-a-half-year relationship picked apart in the public eye.

When asked if he's listened to TTPD , Alwyn replied, “In thinking on what I was going to say, I would think and hope that anyone and everyone can empathize...This isn’t a direct answer to your question, but just thinking about what I want to talk about. I would hope that anyone and everyone can empathize and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving, fully committed relationship of over six and a half years.”

On top of the general fuss among fans and tabloids over the breakup, Alwyn has been the subject of additional scrutiny since Swift announced TTPD at the GRAMMYs in February. Which many assumed would be solely about Joe, later to be surprised with the Matty Healy of it all.

Also discussing the difficulties of a breakup with the added pressures of unavoidable headlines, Joe expressed, “That is a hard thing to navigate. What is unusual and abnormal in this situation is that, one week later, it’s suddenly in the public domain and the outside world is able to weigh in.”

“So you have something very real suddenly thrown into a very unreal space: tabloids, social media, press, where it is then dissected, speculated on, pulled out of shape beyond recognition,” he continued. “And the truth is, to that last point, there is always going to be a gap between what is known and what is said. I have made my peace with that.”

"As everyone knows, we together — both of us, mutually — decided to keep the more private details of our relationship private,” Alwyn said of his and Swift's relationship in relation to the public eye, which is quite the opposite route she and current beau Travis Kelce have opted for.

As Joe went on to say, “It was never something to commodify and I see no reason to change that now,” Alwyn said to the British news outlet. “And, look, this is also a little over a year ago now and I feel fortunate to be in a really great place in my life, professionally and personally. I feel really good.”

Opting not to comment about his thoughts on TTPD tracks like “So Long, London” and “loml” (both rumored to be about him), and declining to talk more about the breakup or his current dating life, Alwyn expressed, “I’m sure you can appreciate, given the level of noise and scrutiny about my past relationship, why I wouldn’t want to just open the door to things like that right now.”

And with that, it sounds like it’s about that time to let Joe Alwyn protect his peace.
