Franklin County battling large wildfire, level 2 evacuation issued

FRANKLIN CO., Wash. -- Several regional fire agencies are battling a fire near Fir Road and North Columbia River Road.

    UPDATE 6:35 P.M.

Fire crews from Benton, Walla Walla and Franklin counties worked Monday, June 17th to put out a fire near Fir road and North Columbia River Road. The fire is currently about 80 percent contained and burned around 200 acres.

Franklin County Fire District Five Fire chief Brian Thornhill said the fire started just after noon in the 24-hundred block of Columbia River road. The winds carried the blaze to the north and east up the steep canyons. The fire prompted officials to call for level one "get ready" evacuation precautions.

Fire chief Mike Harris, who is with Franklin County Fire District Three, said people in six to eight homes off of Columbia River Road and one on Cottonwood Drive were told about the precautions but no homes ended up being evacuated.

Power was shut off to the area as some power poles were destroyed by fire.

The DNR also sent a resource helicopter to help put out the flames.
