As a mom and an occasionally stressed woman on a flight handling her overtired child, when there's a debate about a kid's behavior on a plane, I'm almost always going to side with the parents. Not only is traveling with kids hard enough, but it's also really hard to predict what their behavior will be like on a plane, an environment they probably aren't in very often — not to mention the fact that you're trapped in a confined space and unable to walk away from the situation with your kid until they cool down.
But now, I may have finally found a situation where I am going to have to side with the annoyed passenger. One woman took to TikTok to share her flight nightmare story, and it's sparked quite a reaction in the comments.
On Monday, June 17, @shaylamonnier shared the story of what happened to her on a recent flight from Atlanta to Denver involving a child who was sitting in the row in front of her and her husband. Everything was going smoothly until the last hour of the flight, when the child (who she estimated to be between the ages of 3 and 5) in front of her turned around and started blowing raspberries, getting spit everywhere in the process.
When her parents realized what was going on, they told her not to, but it didn't stop — and the woman and her husband were getting spit on their faces and arms because of how frequently this was happening. Nothing the child's parents could do reigned her in, either.
"They clearly had no control," the OP said. "Two adults could not control a 4 year old child."
This sparked a debate in the comments. While many people said they would have tried to distract the little girl to stop the spitting or just ignored her until she got bored, others said they definitely would have spoken up.
"I would have told the child to stop spitting, & turn around. If that didn’t work I’d call for a flight attendant," one person wrote.
"I would have ordered a glass of wine for me and the mom," another commented.
How She Handled the Situation
In a follow up video , the OP shared the way that she handled the situation... though she did admit she was a bit worried they were going to end up getting kicked off the plane!
"My husband very sternly said to the parents, 'If you don't get your kid under control, I'll do it for you,' and 'why don't you put a mask on her? You guys are both wearing masks, why doesn't she have a mask,'" she said. "Then the mom yelled back at him and said, 'If you had kids you'd understand,' to which my husband replied, 'We have five children and six grandchildren and I promise you not one of them would do something like that.'"
This is when flight attendants got involved, since the situation was getting heated, and gave the child a mask and told the parents she needed to wear it since she was spitting.
Not long after, the child fell asleep, and the rest of the flight went smoothly.
No matter what, this sounds like a complete nightmare to deal with. In a situation like this, the best course of action is probably to call a flight attendant over — they've probably seen and handled much worse!
