In a world that is increasingly being taken over by AI, it's rare to see a large corporation turn away from automation, but McDonald’s is doing just that.

The fast food chain announced that it is ending its AI ordering system at some of its drive-thrus — for now.

The fast food giant said in a statement to TODAY.com that it had decided to end its partnership with IBM on an automatic order taker (AOT) using AI technology, and people everywhere will be happy to hear the news.

It May Come Back In the Future

The company says that this decision was made after the bots botched too many orders.

“Through our partnership with IBM, we have captured many learnings and feel there is an opportunity to explore voice ordering solutions more broadly,” a representative for McDonald’s said in the statement. “After thoughtful review, McDonald’s has decided to end our current global partnership with IBM on AOT beyond this year. IBM remains a trusted partner and we will still utilize many of their products across our global System.”

The partnership with IBM began in 2021 to help “growing demands” on the company’s restaurants, and to “determine if an automated voice ordering solution could simplify operations for crew, and create a faster, improved experience” for customers, McDonald’s said at the time.

The company said that it still sees a “tremendous opportunity” to advance restaurant technology and that it will make a decision on “a future voice ordering solution by the end of the year.”

    It Wasn't Accurate Enough

The decision came after McDonald’s customers had documented their interactions with AI technology on social media.

Some of the failures went viral online, including one TikTok from 2022 where a man struggled to order a Mountain Dew with his Big Mac meal and instead kept getting a medium Coke added to his order.

“No, no, that’s not correct. Cancel,” he said, before attempting to order his meal again.

In another TikTok, a user attempted to buy two ice cream cones, but bacon was added to the ice cream. When he tried to remove the bacon, the system added three ice cream cones to his order, according to the video.

A woman posted her attempt to order water and a vanilla ice cream, and while the system got her order correct, it also added four ketchup packets and two butter packets that she did not order, TODAY. come reports.
