HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — Pennsylvania is receiving new federal funding to help first-time home buyers.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (DHUD) is giving nearly $500,000 in grants to the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) to provide certified housing counselors to low-income and minority families in Pennsylvania.

These counselors will help ease the navigation of the home-buying process.

“We’re not just celebrating the awarding of funds. We’re celebrating the changing of futures,” the DHUD Assistant Secretary for Housing Julia Gordon said. “These awards will bring new opportunities for families to attain what we often call the American Dream. That opens up new and exciting possibilities.”

The counselors will teach the clients about mortgage delinquency, preventing foreclosure, and managing debt. According to the PFHA, counselors have helped 450,000 families find stable homes.
