STEVENSVILLE — Kent Island Library became a diverse garden of knowledge and local horticulture as the Kent Island Garden Club presented “Books in Bloom’’ June 13.

The horticulture specialty show saw 151 entries from all over the Eastern Shore sharing a love of local flora at the neighborhood library as gardeners of all types were invited to share entries from their yards and gardens.

Welcoming garden club members as well as the general public, categories on display included annuals, perennials, herbs, trees and shrubs as well as educational exhibits on recycling.

Judging was preformed by National Garden Clubs, Inc. accredited judges.

Winning recognition for her dill plant, Jean Leathery of Kent island emphasized one did not need to be an horticulture expert to be part of their local garden club.

“It is very supportive of beginners,” she said.

Kent Island Federation of Arts Judy Tucker presented an education section about the artisanal importance of recycling, repurposing shells, driftwood, corks and more, art can be created out of anything especially that which might otherwise be thrown away.

“I love recycling,” she said, “I always ask, “What can I do with this?”

It was Kent Island Garden Club Member Doris Key’s first time entering a garden show and was surprised by the recognition all nine of her entries received, from first place to honorable mention. Key highlighted the potential beautiful surprises even greenhorn gardeners are able to grow.

“Even if you don’t think you have anything you have something. You’d be amazed what’s in your yard,” she said.

As Summer Reading kicked off at the public library, the Kent Island Garden Club welcomed the opportunity to be out in the community.

“Community effort is what we’re all about,” Kent Island Garden Club member Linda Elias said.
