The Tyrrell County Chamber of Commerce will hold an open house and ribbon cutting for the new Blue Juniper Inn on Saturday, June 22 at 10 am. The public is invited to attend. Jaki Shelton Green, North Carolina poet laureate, will read selections from her broad repertoire of poetry and prose; and nationally recognized painter David Davenport welcomes everyone to a retrospective of his work, which will remain on view at the inn through mid-July.

To celebrate the open house, speakers and guests include Kimberly Mack, district director for U.S. Congressman Don Davis, Columbia Mayor James Cahoon, Tommy Everett, chair of the Tyrrell County Board of Commissioners, and Ed Goodwin, NC House of Representatives: District 1.

Formerly the Brickhouse Inn, the Blue Juniper Inn is located at 415 Main Street in Columbia and boasts five inviting guestrooms, an expansive wraparound porch, and a vast lawn for bocce, croquet and other outdoor games. The inn – only four blocks from the Scuppernong River – will have kayaks and bicycles for guests to use. Small concerts and other activities are planned for the lawn, porch and living room. The inn and the grounds will also be available for special occasions like weddings, reunions and other celebrations.

“We are thrilled about the ribbon cutting and open house,” said proprietors John McCann and Nancy McKaig. “When we consider the natural and recreational amenities of the region, along with the cultural assets like Pocosin Arts and School of Fine Craft – just three blocks away – we truly see the Blue Juniper Inn as a unique destination where our guests can truly stay in harmony with art and nature!”

“North Carolina’s Inner Banks region is emerging as ‘a photographer’s paradise.’ The Blue Juniper Inn is perfectly located for easy access to many of the Southeast’s most splendid wildlife sanctuaries. Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), along with Alligator River NWR – the northernmost habitat for the American Alligator – and Mattamuskeet NWR, are all within 45 minutes of the Inn. Among these 350,000 undisturbed acres, it’s common to spot red wolves, black bears, migrating tundra swans, Canadian geese, and so much more,” stated the announcement of the event.
