Yellowstone star Kevin Costner has set his sights on new frontiers with his upcoming passion project, Horizon: An American Saga . But the Western drama is certainly coming at a cost for the actor, considering he’s self-financed a large portion of what is becoming a four-part series.

The actor visited Today With Hoda & Jenna during Thursday’s broadcast to chat about the endeavor.

“I don’t really fall out of love with things. When I finally decided I was just going to make it, [I said], ‘I’m going to bring the best movie I possibly can, and I’m not gonna fall out of love with it,'” Costner said. “And suddenly, there were four [installments]. I was really happy that I was able to make them. It didn’t matter how it got made, it’s made.”

After he added that he recently started shooting the third installment, Jenna Bush Hager pointed out that he “bet on himself” as she replied, “So you’re shooting the third, you’ve already shot the first and second, you mortgaged a home…”

He replied, “[I did] more than that, more than that.” He then pretended to shoot himself as he comically made a “kaboom” sound. He said, “No, I don’t want to do that. If there’s a way for me to fulfill a dream, if I have to look to myself, I do.”

Though he didn’t get into specifics about how he financed the film, Costner said his children completely supported his decision to do so, even if it impacts their inheritance.

“When I did what I’ve done — and they know what I’ve done — they all came to me and said, ‘We don’t care about what you’re going to leave us, we care about what we have together and we care about you, so if you want to risk that, because you earned that, that’s up to you, dad,'” he said on Today . “And so there was never… ‘Oh god, you’re gonna lose this thing that we were gonna get,’ they were like, ‘No, we cant lose you.'”

Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb appeared to be moved by the story. “God, they were really raised right,” Kotb remarked, to which Costner replied, “Well they authored those remarks on their own, it was pretty stunning for me and a great relief for me.”

Deadline reported that the first three Horizon installments cost the actor $98 million, while the fourth installment will surely bring that amount to over $100 million.

“I’ve acquired — I don’t need four homes,” Costner told the outlet at Cannes Film Festival, where Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 received a standing ovation. “I’ll risk those homes to make my movies. I want to leave them to my children, but my children will have to live their own lives.”

Unfortunately for fans, the actor didn’t mention whether he will be returning to Yellowstone , though he recently stated that he “ would love ” to reprise his role as the Dutton patriarch one more time.

Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 premieres in theaters June 28.
