NFL owners want a QB salary cap?

The NFL quarterback market has climbed at a remarkable rate in recent years, and some team owners are reportedly concerned about how high the figures are getting.

During an appearance on Wednesday’s edition of “The Rich Eisen Show,” Tom Pelissero of NFL Network revealed that there has been some discussion around the league about the idea of implementing a quarterback salary cap .

“There has certainly been discussion within the league among certain owners about even the idea of a quarterback cap, that at some point you don’t want quarterback numbers to go over a certain percentage of your salary cap,” Pelissero said, via Timothy Rapp of Bleacher Report .

Pelissero said there are some who feel adopting a salary cap structure similar to the one the NBA uses could be beneficial for the NFL. The NBA has “max” and “supermax” contracts, and the percentage of the salary cap that can be dedicated to those contracts is capped. However, Pelissero said the idea of a quarterback cap has not gained much traction, mainly because some NFL teams have already signed their franchise quarterbacks to massive long-term contracts .

In an ideal world, the NFL salary cap would continue to grow at the same or a greater rate than the quarterback market. There are some QBs with inflated contracts, but that just speaks to how important the position is. As long as teams are willing to pay enormous salaries, the cost of locking down a starting quarterback will only continue to increase.
