115 Die In Mexico, Count Will Grow

The heat dome that lingered over the Western US and much of Mexico has killed 155 people in Mexico. The figure is almost certainly undercounted and will grow. Additionally, more scorching summer heat in July and August may rise even higher than the 110-degree F temperatures last week. That means a population, many of which are in areas where air conditioning is scarce, will face another wave of heat too high for some people to survive.

Highest Temperatures –125 Degrees F

Mexico has no sophisticated system in many areas to accurately count deaths. It does not have the medical infrastructure to provide the central government with numbers. Death certificates do not always list heat as a primary or contributing factor. The country is among the largest in the world geographically, making accurate figures impossible.

Heat Will Get Worse

One new study shows that the deadly heat will be relentless. According to The Guardian, “The deadly heatwave that scorched large swaths of Mexico, Central America, and the southern US in recent weeks was made 35 times more likely due to human-induced global heating, according to research by leading climate scientists from World Weather Attribution (WWA).”

The chances the hottest part of the summer is over are very low. That means more people will die later in the season.
