LINCOLN COUNTY, S.D. (KELO) — The rain just keeps coming. In Lincoln County, fields are flooded, roads are closed, and in town, the streets look more like creeks in some places. Most drivers are careful to navigate the standing water slowly. Some homeowners are doing their best to protect their property. In some cases, the sandbags are keeping the water away, but in other cases, they aren’t enough.

“We are filling sandbags for the public to come and pick them up we are going to fill as many as we can because we’ve got more rain coming tonight, said County Emergency Coordinator Harold Timmerman.

Timmerman says sandbags are the first line of defense when it comes to keeping water out of your home or business.

“There is always sand here, and we keep sandbags in Canton. We had some prefilled, but they are long gone”, said Timmerman.

Sandbags also surround part of the Lincoln County Courthouse. Even Emergency managers are not immune to the flooding, while out working in the field Harold Timmerman got word his office is flooded

“Your office is plenty wet” said a voice on Timmerman’s phone.

Road, business closures due to rain

Wrestling Coach Jeremy Ask says student-athletes from every sport are ready to help out filling sandbags.

“In fact, I sent out my text message, and before I even got down, I lived a block away from the cement plant. Before I got down here, a couple of my girls texted me, where you at, coach? They beat me down here, so their willingness to step up and help out is amazing,” said Ask.

Timmerman says roads all over the county are full of water. This is what the road from Harrisburg to the interstate looks like. His advice.

“If you don’t have to travel in Lincoln County, please don’t,” he said.

The Tri-State Redi Mix Plant in Canton allows the county to fill the sandbags for free.
