Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Customer Service/Chief Diversity and Equity Officer, Suffolk County Water Authority

The Suffolk County Water Authority appointed Janice Tinsley deputy chief executive officer for customer service in 2008. Since that time, Tinsley has led all facets of customer service for the utility, which serves 1.2 million people.

Tinsley was given added responsibility in 2022 when she was appointed the authority’s first-ever chief diversity and equity officer. Tinsley has demonstrated a vision for diversity, equity and inclusion within the organization while developing and implementing workshops and training for all of the authority’s 675 employees. She is taking a “whole company” approach to implementing DEI at the organization, which includes having a DEI perspective in everything from procedures and policy to communication with employees and customers. Tinsley is also leading the efforts to raise the organization’s DEI profile in the minority communities it serves by developing a pipeline for employment for high school students. She has also excelled at fostering an inclusive work atmosphere for all employees by breaking down barriers and having the tough conversations. Additionally, she has implemented a firm-wide “Culture Day” where employees share their heritage and personal stories about where they come from.

Before joining the utility, Tinsley was the town clerk for the Town of Babylon and worked in customer service at Northwest Airlines. Tinsley was also the founder of the Ujima Minority Internship Program and has served as a board member for the Family Life Center.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from Lycoming College and went on to receive her Juris Doctor from Brooklyn Law School.
