Worship comes down to exalting, adoring and obeying God. Unless one spends time looking at God, how can one hear His voice in order to obey it?
Many people say they never see God, yet they never look for Him. In Revelation, John is told to “come up here” to see from God’s point of view. What John saw there has mesmerized and perplexed humanity for 2,000 years. A vision of who God is can change everything!
The first thing that changes when we see God is us. Something is humbling and settling in us when we glimpse the strength, beauty and love of almighty God. To whom should we be afraid when we see who has our back? The answer is no one, ever.
Courage and peace can come to those who see God’s plans and magnitude. Music is a powerful place to center yourself. Words that magnify God over this world will always lead you into safe spaces with God.
It’s biblical, too. Jesus sang hymns when headed to the cross. Paul and Silas sang at midnight in prison. David sang and soothed Saul’s demons. Elisha requested a minstrel so that he may “hear from the Lord.” Worship is a great place to center yourself.
Another benefit to worship is it reveals God. Worship is the quickest way to enter God’s presence. He inhabits the praises of His people.
There is a crazy scene in Elisha’s life where a whole army is coming to take the prophet out because God reveals their plans. Elisha’s servant is scared when he sees the great army coming. Elisha prays for the servant to see the angels encamped around them.
God reveals His power and plans in that moment. The hills were filled with angels on fiery chariots. I will assure you there are more for you than against you. When we access God’s presence, we can access the truth that can’t be seen and the truth can set us free.
The third blessing of worshiping God Almighty is that it has the power to change our world. Cancer, poverty, loneliness and despair may raise their heads, but in the midst of worship, our circumstances can shift.
When we invite the presence of God, we gain the power to overcome. King Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles 20 was in a tight spot with three nations rising against him. He prayed in the temple for God’s help.
The next day, they sent the praisers from the temple out of the city in front of the soldiers. This was a courageous move, but the king was convinced that God was going to come to their rescue. They walked out to see their enemies had turned against one another, and God had sent salvation and victory to Israel. Worship has the potential to change everything, offering a glimmer of hope in the darkest of times.
The last benefit of worship I’d like to cover is that worship is our greatest weapon against Satan. Worship is how the believer fights their battles. Ephesians 6 describes the relentless nature of the enemy and how we never fight against human beings. We fight against spiritual darkness and must be ready armed with the complete armor of God.
Preparation for battle is done through prayer and trust that what God says is true. Salvation protects our minds. Righteousness covers our vital organs just as a life of righteousness covers what matters most. Trust in the Lord, who reveals the truth that binds everything together.
I want you to know that if God says it, it’s true. Whatever is true when you see God is reality. Your eyes are easily deceived, but God is not. Keep your eyes fixed on stationary objects when your world is being tossed.
The throne of God is not being shaken, and everything else is, so behold Him and obey His will.
