Boomer & Gio believe Edwin Diaz ejection was likely warranted

Edwin Diaz could be facing a 10-game suspension after he was ejected for what the umpires deemed was an inappropriate substance on his hands during Sunday’s series finale against the Cubs.

Diaz didn’t get to throw a pitch in Sunday’s game before he was checked by umpires and subsequently ejected, which now makes him eligible for the suspension, per MLB rules.

There are plenty of arguments about the rule itself and how it is policed, but given how the rules currently stand, Gio says Diaz should have known better.

“Edwin Diaz struggled very badly early in the season and probably needed to get an edge somehow and pushed the limits with the sticky stuff,” Gio said. “I understand there’s some ambiguity there with what you’re allowed to use or how much…but I don’t know if there’s a better way to do it than what they’re doing right now.”

Callers chimed in to defend the Mets closer, but Boomer seemed to side with his co-host, believing that Diaz likely was using a substance to gain an edge, and was simply caught in the act like Max Scherzer did when he was with the Mets.

“It was hotter than hell at Yankee Stadium, and both Max Fried and Nestor Cortes pitched very well. I’m sure they were checked like usual,” Boomer said. “If there were two pitchers that would have trouble controlling the baseballs, it would be Sunday at Yankee Stadium, not last night at Wrigley Field.”
