The American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) and the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) this week signed a memorandum of understanding signaling a joint commitment to strengthen the industry’s workforce by encouraging the development of engagement and diversity efforts.

EEI represents all U.S. investor-owned electric companies, and it was during its annual thought leadership forum this agreement was signed. It followed new programming developed by it and AABE, like the Executive Leadership Summit – a gathering of industry executives, leaders from Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) and national civic organizations, as well as elected officials to discuss best practices growing more diverse leadership.

“America’s electric companies have long demonstrated a strong commitment to community engagement and investment,” Dan Brouillette, EEI president and CEO, said. “Our partnership with AABE is critical to ensuring we build and maintain a diverse, world-class workforce for our industry. We are proud of this relationship and our joint efforts to support local communities across the country.”

A big part of this arrangement will be starting the leadership training process earlier for those candidates with potential and increasing connections with HBCUs and minority-serving institutions. EEI and AABE have worked together for decades on these sorts of efforts, but this memorandum will be used to increase engagement opportunities at the federal, state and local levels.
