It’s been a long time since “Stars Are Blind” was played in a club, but a new Hilton hit has arrived on the scene. While she has been slowly resurfacing into music with the occasional single and collaboration, Paris Hilton is officially relaunching her musicianship status. Her latest single, “I’m Free”, marks the first song released from her upcoming sophomore album named Infinite Icon , set to be produced by Sia . And it also marks the first collaboration -- Hilton brought on British-Japanese singer Rina Sawayama to join in all her autotune glory.
But we’ll have to wait a little longer for completely original material. “I’m Free” is actually a modern take on the 1997 R&B-inspired song by Ultra Nate . Using a sample, Hilton has changed the song into a full house and pop-techno banger. “There's nothing in the world that can bring me down / There's no one in the room who could take my crown” she sings in her new lyrics.
To Paris, however, the song is much more than just a new summer hit. “A song can change your life, and that’s what ‘Free’ by Ultra Naté did for me,” Paris said in a press release. “I heard it for the first time at a club in New York City shortly after being released from the Provo Canyon School where I experienced mental and physical abuse. For me, the song represents the journey of healing and finding your voice.”
That empowering message surely means a lot to Sawayama as well, who has been in a public battle with her record label Dirty Hit. The 33-year old singer has said before that she felt ‘trapped’ under her current contract, noting “how truly rotten the industry is.” Thus, featuring on “Free” was surely a statement within itself.
“Together, Rina and I hope to inspire fans around the world to embrace their own strong voices and feel free to fully express themselves,” Hilton said about the single.
