As Walmart gradually raises the wages of its estimated one million hourly workers, the retailer has no choice but to take action to absorb the costs.

The retailer decided to do so by increasing employee productivity to offset the higher wages.

Earlier this month, Walmart announced it will be changing the way it labels its over 120,000 products.

The store has plans to switch its thousands of paper price tags to digital price tags throughout its 2,300 US locations by 2026.

    THREE BENEFITS

The official statement regarding Walmart’s new tech was written by Daniela Boscan, a food and consumable team lead at Walmart in Texas .

“Working with DSLs has transformed my daily routine,” she began, listing three core benefits of the digital price tags.

The first benefit Boscan cited was increased productivity.

She noted that because the new price tags can be updated with a few clicks, “A price change that used to take an associate two days to update now takes only minutes with the new DSL system.”

This can mean more savings for shoppers, as instant pricing updates mean instant savings when a product is discounted .

The increased productivity also frees up employees’ time to assist customers.

Boscan listed simplified stock replenishment as a second benefit.

The new “Stock to Light” feature permits employees to scan the digital tags to signal which product areas need attention, making it easier for workers to identify these areas while stocking shelves.

The Walmart team lead cited the “Pick to Light” feature as offering a third benefit to employees.

It allows for faster online order picking and fulfillment by guiding associates to the items in online orders while simultaneously improving order accuracy.

    Digital price tags

Digital price tags, or electronic shelf labels (ESLs), were first used in stores in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Kohl’s first rolled out digital price tags in 2013 as part of its effort to modernize and enhance the shopping experience.

Other retailers such as Target , Best Buy , Nordstrom , and Macy’s have similarly utilized digital price tags.

The tags allow for real-time updates of prices, promotions, and product information.

    SHOPPER FEAR

The new price tags will benefit shoppers by allowing for more employee assistance, increasing online order accuracy, and increasing the speed by which discounts are displayed.

However, many Walmart customers fear the electronic tags will take a hit to their wallets.

“Prices change so many times (always upward, never down) that Walmart is switching from plastic price tags to digital price tags at the shelves on all its supermarkets nationwide,” blasted one shopper on Facebook .

“They’re going state by state but they expect the change to be completed by year’s end. JesusChrist! They found a way to screw us digitally!”

However, a Walmart executive shared that shoppers have nothing to fear.

“It is absolutely not going to be one hour it is this price and the next hour it is not,” said Greg Cathey, senior vice president of transformation and innovation.

In related news, Walmart shoppers fume over long lines and 5 in-store hurdles after store changes.

Plus, The U.S. Sun spoke with a retail expert on why Walmart is the “world’s most dominant retailer” and how it’s set to beat rivals.
