Brian Mitchell and JP Finlay seem split on Eric Bieniemy's backwards hat ban

Dan Quinn is a backwards hat guy, which is what makes this story so much more bizarre: word has come out that among other things, Eric Bieniemy barred his Commanders group from wearing backwards hats in the building.

“I think there’s so much evidence why the EB thing was never going to work almost from the beginning – that can’t come from the OC when there's a head coach that's also the president of football ops,” JP Finlay said. “That sounds like a tone that like a Tom Coughlin type of dude could set, but when you're not the guy, you can't install rules like that. Trying to install a rule like that, I also think is dumb.”

“I disagree – they said they were gonna try to bring somebody in to change up the way they were doing things, so if I bring a guy in and he says we have rules in Kansas City like that, we're gonna do it here,” BMitch replied. “At least you need to have that coach trying.”

JP asked if Andy Reid, who coached BMitch in Philly, really cared about backwards hats, but BMitch had both proof and an example.

“Andy cared about certain ways you dressed, certain things you did – like on the road, we couldn't wear blue jeans,” Brian said. “I didn't wear blue jeans on the road, and I could have sat up there like most guys would do, they'll go buy some green jeans and some brown jeans – I didn’t wear jeans when the coach said no jeans. Being a veteran guy, you start following those rules, guess what happened? Other people start following them! And it doesn't mean you're gonna win, but the fact that people just fought that little ban like that…it was probably the same was the same people that were complaining about EB, and two of them are not here anymore.”

And then B went off on a rant about last year, a bit.

“This was the problem with this team though: they complain about every change, whether it's something for football or not,” Brian said. “Just like it said in the story, if you're not winning, you can't expect this – well, if you're not winning, you can't expect to set the rules as players, either. There was a lot of stuff when I played that I thought was the dumbest things in the world, but the coach set the rule in place, and you follow it.”

“Not being able to wear a hat backwards seems dumb to me – I wear a hat backwards a lot – but things pick up when you win, and fall apart as you lose,” was JP’s reply.

Seems like the guys will have to agree to disagree here.

“Sometimes you don't wait till you start winning when you're a new person coming in and want to do something new – you set a tone early,” Brian said. “If I have someone to support me in it, it could go.”

“I think that whole marriage was so broken from the beginning, because you had a guy that was in charge of everything, and then he hired somebody to be in charge, and that dude really tried to assert himself – probably more than he should have in hindsight – and it just never was gonna work,” JP said. “I think the hat ban is a testament to it, and frankly, I'm happy to not have to deal with that kind of stuff.”

“We have sat here and we've allowed a lot to go on with this football team, and it’s changed, but still,” Brian replied. “Ultimately, if these players don't get better on the field and a and a lot of that is their own doing, and if you had a coach who would support the person who was trying to make the changes that he probably sat down and talked to them about, then you would have had a change happen quicker.
